The Development of Innovative Small Wind Turbine Technologies project (IsWindTech) has been funded by the European Regional Development Fund to assist SME’s in the North West wishing to utilise small wind turbine technology. The project also aims to expand the university’s research activities in wind energy engineering and feed this back to the wind turbine manufacturing, installation and maintenance supply chain with the ultimate aim of creating jobs in the region.

Benefitting from the expertise of the Wind Energy Engineering Research Group in the School of Computing, Engineering and Physical sciences at UCLan, the project offers SME’s the chance to have a feasibility report created, free of charge, to discover whether a small wind turbine on their site would be viable. The feasibility study will address the issues of wind turbine viability, planning, grid connection and finance.

Several research themes will support these activities based on UCLan expertise in Tribology, Advanced Manufacturing and most significantly in wind turbine blade design, manufacture, aerodynamics analysis, control and smart application of renewable energy sources.

Funded support is available to:

• Small to medium size enterprises

• Farmers and landowners

• Community-based energy generation initiatives

• Schools and hospitals
