The government has set up a new Leadership and Management Advisory Service (LMAS) to help eligible employers identify and fund development opportunities for their senior leaders.

The aim of the service is to foster the leadership and management skills of senior staff so they can make full use of their workforce and accelerate the growth of their business.

Eligibility

To be eligible, the business must be in England and:-

• Have between 2 – 249 full-time equivalent employees, and the potential for high or fast growth. (The business must project growth of 20% year on year for 3 years. Start ups (Trading less than 12 months) must be projecting turnover to reach £500K in 3 years time, and  social enterprises are required to project growth of 10% each year for 3 years).

• In organisations under 50 employees, the applicant must be the CEO, MD or Owner

• In organisations of 50 employees + the applicant can be  either one of above or a role that reports directly into above roles

Eligible businesses will receive:

• A free skills diagnostic from a skills adviser to identify the leadership and management development required by the nominated leader

• A government grant of up to £1,000 for use on management and leadership development activity, such as any training agreed with the skills adviser

The eligible business will be required to ‘match fund’ the grant – i.e. to receive a grant of £500 the business will have to contribute £500 of its own money or for a grant of £1000 the business must match with £1000.

Additional Info

The funding must be used for obvious Leadership & Management Development for example one-to-one mentoring or coaching, or attendance at leadership programmes. It cannot be used for anything that might be considered technical or a statutory requirement i.e. training towards ISO or the environment award, tendering writing, IT, website construction, social media, health & safety, CPD.

When the development activity is complete, the skills adviser will discuss the impact with the business and see if there are opportunities for further assistance.

How to Apply

The project is being managed by the Business & Enterprise Group located at Seaham in County Durham. You need to apply for the grant direct yourself (not your provider) by contacting the Admin Dept. at Business & Enterprise Group on 0845 112 0527, or emailing leadership@business-enterprise.net
The admin team will ask you a few questions to check that you and your organisation meet the criteria for the grant.

1. Once the Business & Enterprise Group team are satisfied you have met the criteria, an L&M Advisor will come and see you to carry out a diagnostic to understand what help you will require. This is a pretty straightforward process. At this point you will be asked whether you have a provider already, who must be on the approved Provider Register

2. Providers must be on the supplier register. If they are not on the register you cannot use their services with the grant.  They have all undergone a rigorous selection and accreditation check process to be included on the Provider Register.

3. Companies and applicants that have accessed the grant under the previous scheme  CAN apply for this grant again.

4. You can only make one application per organisation so even if you only apply for £500 you cannot apply again later for the rest.

5. You may split the funding between different suppliers.

6. Before funding is released you must identify the supplier you will use

7. The value of the grant is up to £1000 (excl VAT) but all funding must be matched by your organisation. So if you want to access £1000 then you need to pay £1000 giving you a total of £2000 (ex VAT) for development.

8. Within 1 week following the start of the learning programme  you will be contacted by  Business & Enterprise staff to check the programme has started. After a couple of months, or at the end of the programme the Leadership & Management  advisor will carry out a face to face evaluation on the impact of the learning activity.

9. You will receive the grant after your programme has been completed.

10. The grant cannot be claimed retrospectively.
